Septic Flesh: Communion

11/04/08  ||  Euthanatos

It seems 2008 will be a pleasant year in terms of quality releases. This time around it’s “Communion” by Septic Flesh that took my world by storm and left me dumbfounded. A good band with decent material, Septic Flesh caught my eye (or ears) with “Sumerian Daemons”, where they suddenly became a bit more extreme and also more varied with their sound.

“Communion” takes that evolution a step further and it really is quite an appealing slab of metal. “Lovecraft’s Death” opens things up beautifully with some amazing deep vocals and background choirs. “Anubis” takes things to a slower tempo, but equally good, aggressive vocals and grandiose keyboards all around. The title track is fucking epic. Once again the choirs are present, gritty vocals, bombastic orchestral keyboards, the works. And blast-beats, of course. You’ve gotta have blast-beats. By far, the most enticing piece of the entire album, and it’s fucking appropriate that they named the record so.

“Babel’s Gate”, fast, furious, double-bass madness, jazzy intermezzos with killer drum work and movie soundtrack-like harmonies. When you’re getting accustomed and acquainted with this, the heaviness breaks through once again and it all descends into madness, the glorious mayhem of Septic Flesh metal. Because that’s what we basically have here. A band that deserves to be the name of a genre, and that’s something special.

“We, The Gods” reminds me of Vader, and that’s naturally a good thing. It’s very fast and brutal, but still has some somber passages with dark chants and orchestral bits. Speaking of orchestral, “Persepolis” will take you somewhere other than this world, a fucking beast of a song with furious and mesmerizing keyboard/sampling/whatever work. Some great clean vocals on “Sangreal” as well, which is worth mentioning.

I love albums that make me feel sure they’ll be at my “best of” list come year’s end even when the year is just beginning. This one is worth those hard-earned bucks.

The cover: A goat-like demon. Scary shit. The digipak has a much cooler cover, though.

9 Greek masterpieces out of 10.
